‘Flora of Sikkim – A Pictorial Guide’ prepared in joint collaboration with Botanical Survey of India (BSI), An apex research organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, carrying out taxonomic and floristic studies on wild plant resources of the country and JICA-assisted Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and forest management project, forest and environment department released by the hands of Chief Minister of Sikkim PS Golay at Dentam, West Sikkim.
Forest minister Loday Bhutia, Forest and Environment ACS cum PCCF ML Srivastava also participated in the ceremony. This book has in-depth details of the taxonomic research in the region since JD Hooker in 1849 and more specifically by the Botanical Survey of India since its inception in Sikkim in 1979. It also contains an exhaustive checklist of 5068 taxa (including 152 cultivated taxa), belonging to 1491 genera and 209 angiosperm families that are occurring in Sikkim with updated nomenclature and distribution.
The Sikkim Express also reports that the ecology, geography, vegetation pattern, and the types of forests that exist in Sikkim have been elaborated in detail in the book. The book also has over 2000 colored photographs of over 1350 species that are found in Sikkim Himalaya. This photographic book will turn a boon for the foresters, scientists, academicians, conservationists, and other stakeholders to identify, cherish and protect Sikkim’s magnificent and unique biodiversity.
