Karnataka : The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), the global bird festival which gained huge popularity is planned to be held from 18th to 21st Februay.
The Bird Count India organises this event every year from the year 2013 and has gained goog popularity as the number of participatants is increasing every year. It draws bird lovers and ornithologists as they get a chance to assess the birds of other regions and compare the sightings.
The event named ‘Bird-a-thon’ witnessed participation of more than one lakh globally last year. The bird watchers captured pictures birds in thier backyard and uploaded them in the document. More than 2,900 birders from India participated and uploaded more than 31,355 checklists, and reported 965 species says the report of The New Indian Express.
According to the report, after Columbia, India had ranked second globalyfor the number of species documented and ranked third after US and Canada in the number of uploaded pictures. The three most common birds reported in India were Common Myna, Red-vented Bulbul and Rose-ringed Parakeet.
The basic objective is to list all bird species seen at a particular location over a time of fifteen minutes or more, at any time over a period of four days, and then upload the list to the bird recording platform at eBird www.ebird.org/india.
