Drastic fall in CSR funding for environment and sustainability sector in India

The funding for the conservation of environment, sustainability has been affected again as the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund flow has gone down drastically. Environment and sustainability segment recorded CSR funding flow tanking to Rs 930 crore in the financial year of 2021 as against Rs 1,461 crore in the financial year 2020.

The India Philanthropy Report 2022 presented by consulting firm Bain & Co, and NGO Dasra revealed that the healthcare sector received Rs 6,363 crore of CSR funding in 2021 from Rs 4,888 crore in 2020. Similarly, the PM Relief Fund received Rs 1,689 crore of CSR funds in the year 2021, which is a massive jump of 112 percent against the previous year when it received Rs 797 crore.

Education sector, a key recipient of the CSR funds, saw flow tapering off 18 percent. In the financial year 2021. This sector has received Rs 5,877 crore.

It can be recalled that ‘Vanyajeevi’ reported about the decline of 16 to 47 per cent in the fund allocation for the three of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) schemes for wildlife conservation as per the ‘State of India’s Environment-2022’ report. Ironically, this report has revealed that environment crimes in India have increased by 78 per cent in the year 2019-20.
