In an objective to prevent the hazard to the wildlife such as permanent disability and even leading to death, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has asked Chief Wildlife Wardens every state of Union territories of India to make it sure that the open wells are closed and covered with normal surface in and around the forest areas.
MoEF&CC has taken this decision after the Chattishgarh based wildlife enthusiast Nitin Singhavi, highlighted the threat posed by open wells to the safety of wild animals and expressed his concern.
We hear many news stories regularly in India about the death of wildlives such as Leopards, tigers, Jackals, civets, Voves, Hyen’s, bison die in hundreds by accidentally falling in the open wells in and around the forests. As the wildlives venture into human habitat in search prays such as cattles, the incident of accidently falling into the wells are reported more, said Singhvi in his appeal to the ministry.
After his appeal, the MoEF&CC has considered the issue serious and have issued a circular respecting the concerns of Singhvi. “Open wells in and around forests may prove to be a hazard to wildlife, leading to death or permanent disablement of wild animals,” said Rakesh Kumar Jagenia, deputy inspector general of forests (Wild Life) MoEF&CC in his circular.
