Karnataka: The Karnataka Biodiversity Board has prepared a report on the Rare, Endangered, and Threatened (RET) species of the grasses in Karnataka. The Grass species -Hubbardia Diandra is one such RET species that need to be protected. According to this report, This grass has to be protected to keep the Jog Falls alive and flowing in splendor.
According to the experts, this grass species is only found in the region of Jog Falls and surrounding areas and because of its strong ground rooting capacity, the shape of the waterfall is intact and helps in preventing soil erosion.
According to the report of journalist Bosky Khanna published in ‘The New Indian Express, daily, The Chairman of Karnataka Biodiversity Board Ananth Hegde Ashisara and forest minister Aravind Limbavali has released the report which lists 32 endangered plants and 56 animals and bird species which need immediate attention from the government and citizens and is a comparison of what was the assessed in 2009 to now.
Other RET species that include in this list are Syzygium Travancoricum gamble (Water jamuns), Myristica, Salim Ali fruit bat, Leatherback sea turtle, Kottigehara a dancing frog, Kolar leaf-nosed bat, Lion-tailed Macaque, Malabar Large Spotted Civet and Sahyadri forest rat among others.
